EstateTally

Terms of use

Last updated 5 October 2026

In short

  • EstateTally is software. It is not legal or tax advice, and we are not a law firm.
  • We do not apply for probate. You decide every value and claim, and you sign and send the IHT400 yourself.
  • The IHT400 pack costs £149 per estate, paid once. Because the pack is supplied straight away at your request, the 14-day right to cancel ends once it is supplied — see cancellation and refunds.
  • Your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 are not affected.

1. Who we are

EstateTally at estatetally.co.uk is provided by:

Northpine Labs LLC
Postal address: not yet published. Please write to us by e-mail; if you need a postal address for a letter, we will give it to you.
E-mail: [email protected]
Contact form: send us a message

In these terms “we” and “us” mean Northpine Labs LLC, and “you” means the person using the service.

2. What EstateTally is

  • Software that helps a personal representative — an executor, or an administrator where there is no will — prepare their own Inheritance Tax account (form IHT400 and its schedules) for an estate in England and Wales. It reads the documents you upload, builds an inventory for you to check, fills in HMRC’s own forms box by box from your answers, works out the tax by the rules in the law and HMRC’s published guidance, checks for common mistakes, and produces a checklist and a cover letter.
  • General information only. Explanations describe the rules in general, with a reference to the law or to HMRC’s manual. We do not give legal, tax or financial advice about your estate, and we do not decide anything for you. If you need advice, please speak to a solicitor, a chartered tax adviser or an accountant.
  • We are not a law firm or an accountancy firm, and we are not regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority or by any other legal or accountancy regulator. You therefore do not have the protections that come with using a regulated professional.
  • We are not affiliated with HMRC or any part of government. HMRC’s forms are free on GOV.UK and you can fill them in without us.

3. What we do not do

  • We do not prepare probate papers or apply for a grant of probate or letters of administration — including forms PA1P and PA1A and the online application. Preparing probate papers is a reserved legal activity under the Legal Services Act 2007 (section 12 and Schedule 2), and we stay outside it.
  • We do not contact HMRC, the probate registry or any bank on your behalf, we do not sign or send anything for you, and we do not act as your agent.
  • You decide every value, every exemption and every claim — for example whether gifts were normal expenditure out of income, or whether to pay tax by instalments. You check the account, sign the declaration and send it to HMRC yourself.

4. Estates the software can help with

EstateTally covers estates of people who died on or after 1 January 2022, dealt with under the law of England and Wales, who were long-term UK residents (or domiciled in the UK, for deaths before 6 April 2025). It does not cover, for example: Scotland or Northern Ireland; business or agricultural relief; unlisted, AIM or controlling shareholdings; houses or land abroad; trusts the person could benefit from, gifts into trust or gifts with reservation of benefit; disputed wills; and, until HMRC publishes the final forms, deaths on or after 6 April 2027 with unused pension funds.

The free check and the estate workspace look for these cases and tell you before you pay, so that you can get professional help instead. You cannot buy a pack for an estate the software cannot prepare. Where one figure is better worked out by HMRC — for example where tax-free legacies need grossing up, or the downsizing addition to the residence nil rate band — the pack says so, and the IHT400 lets you ask HMRC to work out the tax.

5. Your responsibilities

  • Give accurate and complete information, and upload only documents you are entitled to use for the estate.
  • Check every value against your documents and correct anything the software read wrongly. The account is yours, and personal representatives are responsible to HMRC for it.
  • Make the “fullest enquiries that are reasonably practicable” that HMRC’s declaration asks for, and list any provisional figures.
  • Complete the boxes the pack leaves for you, such as National Insurance numbers, account numbers, signatures and dates.
  • Keep to HMRC’s deadlines. The software shows them, but meeting them is up to you.
  • Keep your sign-in e-mails private.

6. Free features and the preview

The free check, the calculator, the guides, uploading documents, the inventory and a preview of the forms cost nothing. The preview is watermarked and the amounts are hidden. There is no contract for the paid pack until you pay.

7. The pack, price and payment

  • The IHT400 pack costs £149 for one estate, paid once. The price shown is the price you pay; nothing is added at checkout. It is not a subscription.
  • Payment is taken by Stripe on its checkout page, by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. We do not see your card details.
  • The contract is made when your payment is confirmed. We confirm it by e-mail, including your request for immediate supply (section 8).
  • One purchase covers one estate. It includes:
    • The IHT400 and the schedules this estate needs
    • The IHT400 Calculation
    • An inventory PDF
    • A box-by-box map
    • A submission checklist
    • A cover letter
    • Deadline reminders
  • After payment you can change your answers and download the pack again for 90 days, after which the estate is deleted as described in the privacy notice.
  • Other costs are not paid to us: any Inheritance Tax, the probate application fee (£526 for an estate worth more than £5,000, according to GOV.UK on 5 October 2026) and any valuations you decide to get.

8. Cancellation and refunds

You have a 14-day right to cancel. The pack is made available straight away only if you ask for that at checkout and confirm that you understand you lose the right to cancel once it has been supplied. The full rules, the self-service refund when our software could not read your documents, and the model cancellation form are on the cancellation and refunds page.

9. If something is wrong with the pack

The pack must be of satisfactory quality, fit for its purpose and as described, and our service must be provided with reasonable care and skill (Consumer Rights Act 2015). If it is not, tell us — use “Report an error in a form” on the contact page. We will correct it, or produce the pack again, within a reasonable time and without significant inconvenience to you. If we cannot, you may be entitled to a price reduction or a refund.

10. Our responsibility for loss

  • If we fail to comply with these terms, we are responsible for loss or damage you suffer that is a foreseeable result of our breach or of our failure to use reasonable care and skill. Loss is foreseeable if it is obvious that it would happen, or if both of us knew it might happen when the contract was made.
  • We do not exclude or limit our liability where it would be unlawful to do so. This includes liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, and for breach of your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
  • Inheritance Tax is owed by the estate under the law whatever figure the software shows, so tax that turns out to be due is not itself a loss caused by us. We are not responsible for the results of information you gave that was wrong or incomplete, for decisions you take as personal representative, or for decisions of HMRC or the courts.
  • The service is for dealing with an estate. If you use it in the course of a business, we are not responsible for loss of profit, loss of business or business interruption.

11. Using the service fairly

Do not try to reach estates that are not yours, interfere with the service, or use automated tools to copy it. We may suspend access where the service is misused. HMRC’s forms are Crown copyright, used under the Open Government Licence v3.0, and we fill in the current editions without changing them. Our software, guides and texts belong to us; you may use the pack for the estate and share it with the other personal representatives, HMRC and your advisers.

12. Complaints

If you are unhappy, please tell us first — choose “Complaint” on the contact page or e-mail us. The contact page sets out how we deal with complaints and how long it takes. For free, independent advice you can contact the Citizens Advice consumer service.

13. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms, for example when the law or the service changes. The terms in force when you pay apply to that purchase. The date at the top shows the current version.

14. Law and courts

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and you can bring proceedings in the courts of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring proceedings in the courts where you live. Nothing in these terms affects your rights as a consumer.
